Build Your Relationship With God

First published February 2016

The Reverend Ray Gibbs asks us to focus on our relationship with God during Lent.

Lent is a time for preparation and denial. It is a purple season, one of two, heralding that something momentous is about to happen in the relationship between God and his creation: between God and you. We are about to ride the rollercoaster ride of the Passion story and the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. What will you deny yourself? How will you prepare? Will you ready yourself to see the familiar afresh? This season is about no one else but you, and your relationship with God; forget family, friends and neighbours, this is about you, about your vocation, your calling to be somebody special in the eyes of God, to be stretched, moulded, guided into the person that God needs you to be in his church.

What is there to do? Well, why not come along to the Lent course? If you are in a home group then please stay in it, but why not add the Lent course to it? Every Tuesday afternoon (2.00pm - 3.30pm) and evening (7.30pm - 9.00pm) in Lent there will be an opportunity for some table talk, plus a look at the words of one of the Passion's main characters. It will be deep, and some may find it difficult to talk over issues raised in 'Gravetalk' (a series on Life, Death, Society, Funerals and Grief), but there again, you may find it inspiring and releasing; you will never know unless you give it a go, plus as we look at Judas, Pilate, the Priests etc: their roles and their words, we may discover new insights, new meanings as their stories unfold.

Then there are two other specials: the Friday Lent lunches and the Wednesday evening lectures by the Bishops of Chelmsford, Colchester, Barking and Bradwell at St. John's Church, so be proactive at Lent, deny yourself what you wish, but add to your learning.
